AA Ireland has blamed successive Governments for ripping-off the average motorist with super taxes on fuels.
The comments come as Irish motorists face some of the highest petrol prices ever recorded. According to the AA, petrol and diesel have risen to all-time record levels with high tax rates being a key factor in this.
It’s not just the AA who is noticing the price hikes. Motorists are contacting the company every day of the week to complain about what it calls the “fuel price rip-off”, reports RTÉ News.
The difference in petrol prices between January and February of this year has risen by 2.1 per cent, while diesel rose 1.3 per cent.
The granddaddy of Irish motoring, Conor Faughnan, had this to say: “There is no doubt about the fact that we are being ripped off but the culprits are not the local garages.
“It is our own Government and the policy of super taxes on fuels.
“This began under the last Government in 2008 and has continued under the current Government, which added another 4 cent per litre in the last Budget.”
