We often use the Lonely Planet tourist guides when we’re headed off to some unknown city, but they’ve given us a new fact about Dublin today that we hadn’t heard before

The Lonely Planet tourist guides are great for all the secrets and info that you might not know about whatever country you happen to be traveling to.

Today though, we got a lesson in our own history from one of the guides, that let us know the real inspiration behind The Spire in Dublin city centre, and apparently it’s an homage to our most famous exports, Aran sweaters.

We really hope that there are a few tourists out there who are going around telling people that this is the truth about The Spire. To be fair, it makes as much sense as the real reason, which we presume was “we had a load of money at the time”.
