It’s official – Apple’s iPad is selling like hot, extremely shiny cakes. Despite sounding like a feminine hygiene product, the iPad has already hit three-million sales worldwide after just 80 days of release, with rabid Irish consumers still weeks away from testing the tablet computer for themselves.
The glossy, porn-free mobile computer launched in the U.S on April 3 and sold a million units in it’s first month. Since then, sales have continued at a breakneck pace, dismissing critics who initially felt the device was nothing more than a glorified iPod Touch, after its device’s initial reveal.
With the iPhone 4 launching this week in the U.S (presumably next month on Irish shores, along with the iPad), it’s an exciting time for Apple CEO Steve Jobs and his app-happy followers. Reacting to the flurry of iPad sales, Jobs proclaimed that “people are loving the iPad as it becomes part of their daily lives”, following up his statement by possibly alluding to its Irish launch next month:
“We’re working hard to get this ‘magical’ product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month.”
Magical you say? Colour us intrigued. Since it’s April launch, 11,000 iPad-specific apps have been created for the device, whilst nearly all of the App Store’s current 225,000 offerings will run on the iPod’s big brother too. More importantly, it makes books a lot more fun, though hopefully not “magical” – as we all remember what happened to Macaulay Culkin in The Pagemaster. Well JOE does, at least.
The Apple iPad is released next month in Ireland, and though no details of pricing have been revealed, we can confirm the device will be sold through mobile operators Vodafone, 3, and O2 stores . Be sure to check back to JOE Tech when full pricing details are revealed.
