How would you like to be the proud owner of a lock of Michael Collins’ hair? Well, a lock is going up for auction later in the month.

A historical memorabilia sale is to take place in Dublin later this month and one of the pieces expected to fetch a lot of interest is the lock of hair that was taken from the corpse of Collins as he lay in state. Other items going under the hammer at Adam’s Auction House include other ‘macabre mementos’ of Collins’ death in Cork in 1922, reports Irish Central.

Still sounds a bit… hairy? Well, Adam’s, the specialist auction house, has confirmed it is to sell: “An envelope containing a lock of tangled brown hair which is inscribed Hair of head of Michael Collins when laid in State in the City Hall August 1922.”

The auction house expects to fetch up to €5,350 for the lock of hair, which is a tad hair raising if we’re honest.

Some of the Collins items have been passed down through the family of Nessie Rogan, a nurse who worked on Collins after his death, but time has come to flog them off for some cash.

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Irish leader’s death, but why anyone would want to spend up to €5,000 on a lock of his hair is just beyond us.
