Andrey Arshavin came to Arsenal’s rescue in today’s early Premier League match by scoring the winner in a close encounter with Blackburn at Ewood Park.

The Gunners took the lead through Theo Walcott’s strike after 20 minutes but Mame Biram Diouf equalised seven minutes later when his namesake El-Hadj Diouf provided the crucial pass.

Robin van Persie was forced off the field with an ankle injury after half an hour of the action and the sides remained level at half-time.

Six minutes after the restart Arshavin restored Arsenal’s lead when Cesc Faregas’ shot deflected into his path and allowed him to make it 2-1.

It was Arsenal’s first away win since March.
