As the rest of the world goes green for Paddy’s Day, Ireland may turn white

With the freezing cold weather sticking around until the weekend, Paddy's Day in Ireland this year could be a white one.

With the freezing cold weather sticking around until the weekend, Paddy’s Day in Ireland this year could be a white one.

Remember the days when you would sit down in your local village as the sun split the stones, with a pint in one hand and a bag of chips in the other as the parade slowly moved past? Well those days are long gone and anyone thinking of hitting up a parade this year would want to wrap up warm.

Yesterday was a bit mad, weather wise, as we pretty much had all four seasons wrapped up in one day. The coldest recorded temperature in the country was -5.7C, in Co Donegal, but those temperatures were expected to drop as low as -8C last night.

The average temperature yesterday was around -1C to 2C but thanks to strong winds that hit up to 75kmh creating serious wind chill, those temperatures felt more like -8C to -11C. You’d know if you were out in them…

Temperatures for this weekend are expected to stay below the average for this time of year with scattered showers and some sleet, hail and snow falling in parts of Ulster and Connacht.

So remember, if you’re thinking of heading down to the parade, make sure to wrap up and have a hip flask handy.
