Liverpool defender Fabio Aurelio will leave Anfield when his contract expires next week and has already attracted interest from European and Brazilian clubs.

The Brazilian will finish his four-year contract as one of manager Rafa Benitez’s most popular choices despite an injury-plagued spell at the club.

Liverpool did offer the 30-year-old a ‘pay as you play’ deal which he rejected and has made it clear he wants to secure a contract with a club for the remainder of his career.

Benitez brought Aurelio to the club in 2006 from Valencia, where they had previously worked together, in a Bosman free deal. The Reds boss said that the full-back will be missed at Anfield.

“Fabio’s contract is nearly finished and he is going to leave us.

“We had been trying to work something out with regards an extension but it was a pity that we couldn’t. He has given us absolutely fantastic service.

“Fabio is a top professional, a great player and a really good lad. I mean every single word I say about him.

“It has been a pleasure having him here and we really will miss him.”
