Changes at Twitter continue apace with today’s announcement that the micro-blogging behemoth will soon implementing some big changes – such as a “you both follow†feature to see similarities in follower’s choices and a new annotations option to add metadata to your tweets.
Following recent implementations such as Tweetie’s transformation to Twitter for iPhone and “Top Tweets†search results, the two announcements are further examples of the site’s desire to enhance the social-networking aspects of what is still predominantly seen as a closed-street form of communication.
The “you both follow†feature is similar to what has been used by Facebook and MySpace, as it will allow users to see if their friends are following their other friends, or if each user share followers. Thus the impetus is to get users interested in potentially broadening their follow list which in turn will lead to greater user activity.
The second big change will be the ability to annotate your tweets with metadata, such as location, films or reviews, with a data limit of 512k per tweet. Twitter has stated that their goal in this instance is to allow more structured data to pass through your tweets rather than the current restrictive limits.
