It’s official: Paul Scholes is back

We thought the talk about Paul Scholes coming out of retirement was a little far-fetched, but he’s back and he’s on the bench for United against City today.

Word that the ginger legend might be persuaded to put on his boots again first surfaced in The Sun yesterday, where it was suggested that Alex Ferguson may look to Scholes to help solve United’s current midfield crisis.

United released a statement on the matter earlier today, which seemed to suggest that it was Scholes, and not the manager, that made the first move.

“Paul Scholes has rejoined the playing staff at Manchester United for the remainder of the season with immediate effect, after approaching Sir Alex Ferguson to reverse his decision, made at the end of last season, to retire,” read the statement.

“He has gone straight onto the bench for this afternoon’s FA Cup third round tie against Manchester City.

“Sir Alex Ferguson said: ‘It’s fantastic that Paul has made this decision. It’s always sad to see great players end their careers, but especially so when they do it early. But he has kept himself in great shape and I always felt that he had another season in him. It’s terrific to have him back.’

“Paul Scholes added: ‘I’ve been pretty clear since I stopped playing that I miss it. I’m delighted the manager feels I can still make a contribution to the team and I’m looking forward to playing my part in trying to bring more success to this great club.’”

The Red Devils are currently ravaged with injuries in midfield, which compounds the fact that it is the position in which they are weakest, with the likes of Michael Carrick and Anderson often failing to match the standard required by the Premier League champions.

Scholes is believed to have been training with the Red Devils as well as fulfilling some coaching duties since the start of the season, having hung up his boots after the humbling defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League Final in May.

So it is a desperate move on behalf of all concerned, or merely common sense? We’ll soon find out.
