Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon could be out of this year’s World Cup after it was revealed that his back injury may be worse than was originally feared.
Buffon was withdrawn at half time in the Azzurri’s 1-1 draw with Paraguay on Monday night due to pain in his sciatic nerve and was replaced by substitute goalkeeper Federico Marchetti.
The 32-year old Juventus keeper insisted in the aftermath of the match that he hoped to recover ‘within two days’, but an Italian team statement released today said, “[He] has a strong sciatic problem. It’s impossible to estimate when he might return.”
