Galway corner-back Ollie Canning has confirmed his retirement from inter-county hurling.

The four-time All-Star had revealed in the aftermath of the quarter-final defeat to Tipperary that he was likely to retire from the game and he confirmed the decision when speaking to RTE’s Sport at 7 Extra on Monday night.

Canning addressed the Galway dressing-room after the last-minute All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Tipperary on Sunday afternoon.

“I just wanted to get the guys together,” the 34-year-old said. “I might not sit in the dressing room with them again.

“I’ve built up great friendships. It was an emotional time, there are great guys and great people in there.

“It was a funny enough situation. I wanted to say it to the lads first.”

Canning has won three All-Ireland club medals for Portumna, but never won an All-Ireland with Galway. He made his debut for his county 13 years ago.

“In all probability that was my last game with Galway,” he said, “I had said that at the start of the year. I doubt if I will be back.”
