Champions Chelsea remain on top of the Premier League after scoring six goals for the second weekend in succession against Wigan at the DW Stadium.

Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou both grabbed braces, with Florent Malouda and Yossi Benayoun also getting on the scoresheet.

Wigan began the game brightly and were the better side for the first half an hour, but Malouda opened the scoring for Chelsea after 34 minutes, tapping in after Chris Kirkland had saved Frank Lampard’s original effort.

Wigan went in at half time a goal behind, but within seven minutes of the second half they were three goals down, with Nicolas Anelka hitting the net twice in the space of four minutes.

Didier Drogba unselfishly supplied Kalou for his first goal after 78 minutes and the pair combined again on the stroke of full-time, with Drogba showing some outrageous skill before crossing for Kalou to nod it in at the far post.

There was still time for one more in stoppage time, with substitute Yossi Benayoun netting his first goal for the club after Paulo Ferreira’s right wing cross.

Benayoun’s goal was Chelsea’s 12th this season and their 29th in their last five league matches, while Wigan have conceded ten goals so far this campaign and remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.
