Chelsea could land Liverpool striker Fernando Torres for a British record transfer fee after the conclusion of the World Cup this weekend, according to reports.
Torres faces an uncertain future at Anfield following the Reds’ failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League and the departure of manager Rafa Benitez, who brought him to the club three years ago.
He will hold talks with Benitez’s replacement Roy Hodgson next week but at this stage it’s unclear whether he will commit his future to Liverpool, opening the door for a Chelsea bid which would eclipse the £32.5million Manchester City paid for Robinho in 2008.
The 26-year-old striker is expected to keep his place in the Spain line-up for Wednesday night’s World Cup semi-final against Germany, despite failing to prosper so far at this tournament.
