Cork City Council has unveiled plans to transform the former Kinsale Road landfill into the country’s largest ‘adventure park’. We just hope it doesn’t stink.
How would you like to have an adventurous day out on top of a landfill in Cork City? Well, by 2018 it could be a very real possibility. Cork City Council plans to reclaim the former city landfill on the Kinsale Road and turn it into the country’s largest adventure, leisure and recreation park. Apparently, it will be one of the largest reclamation projects the country has ever seen.
So what can you expect to see in this adventure park? Will it be anything like Alton Towers? Probably not. The park will be developed around certain themes, those being: family leisure, energy & environment and events & attractions.
According to the Irish Examiner, the parks events and attractions will include:
– A caravan and motor home rest park for visiting tourists.
– An all-weather site capable of hosting concerts, ice rinks, circuses, and equestrian events.
– Indoor and outdoor adventure play areas, including zip wires, climbing walls, luge tracks, and zorbing (those big human sized hamster balls).
– An extreme sports trail and cross-country course.
– A network of cycle and walking trails.
– Wildlife trails and viewing platforms over wetland areas.
– Urban farming and/or allotments.
– An area to highlight the use of renewable energies.
They hope to have the walking trails and cycling paths open to the public before the end of next year as the development of the site will be phased out over the next few years. So keep an eye out if your passing by the area for anything new and exciting.
There is one problem. It all sounds great, but what happens when the rubbish starts to biodegrade over the next 100 years or so? Ah sure, that’s for future generations to worry about… right?
