It is perhaps a sign of just how far Darron Gibson’s stock has fallen that he is being linked with a move to Everton for a little as £1 million.
According to Sky Sports this evening, talks between Everton and Manchester United over Gibson’s move to the Toffees are at an advanced stage as David Moyes looks to boost his threadbare squad with the shot-happy Irish midfielder.
If the Liverpool Echo are to be believed, however, the transfer fee could be £1 million, a fee some would say is bafflingly small considering that it is two Premier League clubs involved, while others would suggest it is too much for man of Gibson’s limited abilities.
A move for Gibson can only be good news for Irish fans as he has been rotting away in the background at Old Trafford all season and needs game time before the Euros in the summer. When he did get in the team – against Wigan on St. Stephen’s Day – he went out celebrating with Wayne Rooney afterwards and was subsequently disciplined by Alex Ferguson (not that Gibson’s punishment got much coverage in the press).
If that didn’t serve as a warning to Gibson that his Old Trafford days were numbered, surely the return of 36-year old Paul Scholes from retirement would have finally convinced him that his time at the Premier League champions was drawing to a close.
Gibson had been linked with a move to Sunderland along with John O’Shea and Wes Brown over the summer, but the deal allegedly collapsed over the Derry native’s wage demands. It wouldn’t seem as if he has much of a bargaining position on this occasion, so we would expect to see him in a blue jersey by the end of the month.
