West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle made sporting history yesterday when he hit the very first ball from a Test match out for six.
Cricket is slowly gaining popularity here in Ireland and it’s good to see because it’s actually quite interesting once you get into the swing of it. Now, we won’t give you the fill history of the sport, but the main thing to remember is that there are two different types of cricket; those being Twenty20 and Test Cricket.
Twenty20 is played over one day and players usually go on an all out blitz to score runs no matter what, while Test Cricket on the other hand is played over five days and players usually take their time and deploy mind games. The same can’t be said for the Jamaican born West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle.
On the very first ball in his country’s Test match against Bangladesh, Gayle smashed the ball straight over the boundary line for six runs. That’s the first time since Test cricket began back in 1877 that such a feat has happened – the first time in 2051 games to be precise.
Sadly, Gayle didn’t last too much longer after his amazing first bat and he walked for just 24 runs from 17 balls. Not a great day at the office to be honest, but he still walked away with his name freshly printed in the history books.
