It was revealed today that the Irish comedian Andrew Maxwell was arrested at gunpoint in the illusive Area 51. So why was Andrew at the secret base and did he see any aliens?
What in the name of E.T. was Andrew Maxwell doing in Area 51?
Well, Channel 4’s ‘King of Comedy’ was over in the US filming for his latest BBC 3 documentary where he looks at debunking certain theories and conspiracies. He’s already looked at the various conspiracies that surround 9/11 and the London 7/7 bombings. However, this time around he was out in the middle of the Nevada desert with a group of Area 51 conspiracists.
Oh right, but what exactly were they looking for?
As you probably already know, Area 51 is shrouded in mystery as no one knows what exactly goes on in there. However, many believe it’s the spot where the U.S. military (allegedly) holds the bodies of aliens and the remnants of an alien spacecraft which crashed in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. The one thing we do know about the top-secret base is that it’s the testing ground for a lot of the US military’s strategic reconnaissance aircraft.
So did Maxwell get far enough in to see any (alleged) aliens?
Not quite. Actually… not at all. The base itself is surrounded by a couple of miles of barren desert and a fairly large chain link fence. The BBC crew, along with Maxwell, entered the base at a checkpoint in the fence that obviously had guards watching close by.
Agents armed with M16 assault rifles arrested the BBC crew at gunpoint and they were made lie face down on the ground for three hours while all their details were checked. The crew was also told that Washington had to call London to advise them “12 ‘Brits’ had just breached security at America’s most top-secret military base” and that they all were going to jail for up to six months. However, we suspect this was just the FBI’s way of having a little fun.
Wow, sounds fairly serious. What’s going to happen to the crew now? Will they actually be locked up?
Thankfully (although that might depend on how much you like Andrew Maxwell), they won’t be locked up. However, anyone who was caught trespassing was fined £375 (roughly €465) and according to the BBC’s UFO expert Darren Perks, 34, one of the cops told him, “Listen, son, we could make you disappear and your body would never be found.” The crew was also ordered not to reveal what they saw, but according to Perks, “We didn’t see anything except a bit of tarmac.”
So will the show be aired or has it been shelved?
Nope, the show will air next Monday so you’ll be able to watch exactly what went down in the comfort of your own gaff – provided you have BBC 3.
