Dirt Showdown: It’s Dirt 4 but it’s not Dirt 4

The trailer for the new Dirt video game has been released and it looks cooler than Kimi Raikkonen’s arctic underwear.

For most of us, when it comes to driving games you’re either a Forza follower or a grand tourer of GranTurismo. Although the loyalty rarely shifts from one title to the other, there is a guilty pleasure that most of us, be you Forza or GT, have in common. That guilty pleasure being Dirt, the rally video game.

Dirt 3 was more than just an off-road racing game as you had the chance to recreate your best Ken Block moves in the Gymkhana events (if you’re not sure what Gymkhana is then check it out here). So we can only expect good things from the newest title set for release in May 2012. But there’d a slight problem, as it’s not Dirt 4. It’s Dirt: Showdown.

So what does this mean to us lovers of the off-road game? Well, it’s going to be more of an “arcade style game” or as GameSpot puts it, “an arcade-style spin-off that takes the extreme-sports elements of Dirt 2, mixes in the Gymkhana events from Dirt 3, and then throws in some Destruction Derby action for good measure”.

Dirt: Showdown will be available on PC, PS3 and Xbox this May. If the game is as good as the trailer, then we’re all in for a treat.
