The first football international between the Republic of Ireland and England in 15 years is expected to take place at the Aviva Stadium in November.
The new stadium at Lansdowne Road was completed earlier this year and the first Ireland football international to take place there will be against Diego Maradona’s Argentina on 11 August.
There will be a number of other high-profile fixtures at the venue over the next 12 months, most notably the final of the Uefa Europa League next May.
And discussions between the Football Association of Ireland and the English FA are reported to be at an advanced stage about the staging of a first meeting between the two countries since the chaotic scenes of February 1995.
On that occasion, a friendly was abandoned after just 27 minutes and riot police called in to quell hundreds of English hooligans, many of them with links to far-right groups.
