A new study has revealed that the number of people fixing their own cars has significantly dropped over the last five years, as people prefer to just leave it to the pros.
Do you have to change your car’s battery? Or do you have to change your car’s oil and filter? If so, chances are you’ll just bring it to some ropey mechanic that will end up charging you an arm and a leg. But why would you bother when we have expert advice here on JOE.
It turns out that most people would prefer to just send their car into a mechanic and let them deal with the issue rather than doing the work themselves. The study, conducted by Saga Motor Insurance, also found that women are less likely to get dirty underneath a car bonnet as only 2% admitted to going down… under the bonnet that is. Steady on!
This is compared to 15 per cent of men who wouldn’t even think of bringing their car to a mechanic even if half the chassis was falling off. Still, what does that say about the other 75 per cent of us?
The research also showed that those who own vehicles of a slighter greater vintage (that’s more than ten years old) are twice as likely to carry out some DIY repairs on their motor. This is compared with only 8% of people who own a new car who said they’d have a go under the bonnet.
In fairness, you’re not going to feck up your brand new motor just because you think the timing belt is off a little.
