While most people want the latest iPhone or Blackberry, one student in the US has taken a step back and created his very own DIY mobile phone that you could even make yourself.

When you walk into a mobile phone shop you’re instantly greeted by loads of overpriced, overcomplicated smart phones. There are so many to chose from it can be hard to tell the differences between them sometimes.

And then there is the fact that you and everyone around you has the same mobile phone. What ever happened to originality? The hipsters stole it, that’s what.

David Mellis is here to change all that, as he hopes to free people from the constraints of mass production, and he plans to ‘explore diverse materials, shapes, and functions’ in the pursuit of this forgotten originality.

The case is made from a printable material so you can make it whatever shape you want

In fairness, it’s pretty cool that you can make your own mobile phone once you have the right tools. Okay, so you won’t be able to download the latest version of ‘Angry Birds’ on the DIY mobile phone just yet, because it’s not that advanced – give it five years and who knows?

David Mellis is a Ph.D. Student in Media Arts and Sciences and a Research Assistant with the High-Low Tech Group in MIT’s Media Lab.

According to the High-Low Tech website, “We hope that the project will help us explore and expand the limits of do-it-yourself (DIY) practice”.

Check out the Hi-Low Tech website to see more of the DIY mobile phone and what parts you need to make one. According to the site, the phone can be made for less than $150, which isn’t bad considering it’s basically 100 per cent customisable.
