The Drums, Forever and Ever Amen. Download here.
The Drums, along with Florida wave molesters Surfer Blood, have been leading the resurgence currently being enjoyed by Beach Boys-style surfer music. They set their stall out early with Let’s go Surfing, but this latest track manages to tone things down for those who don’t like swallowing litres of salt water and having our limbs smashed on craggy coastlines.
They retain the infectiously cheerful aspect of their sound in Forever and Ever Amen without alienating those of us who will never hold a surfboard. Don’t let this young man’s haircut, demeanor and poor attempt to look like Ian Curtis in Joy Division’s Love Will Tear us Apart Again video prevent you from getting a slice of The Drums.

Gorillaz, On Melancholy Hill Download here.
Damon Albarn & Co are back with hard evidence that they can still put together a tune. The whole ‘animated band’ aspect of this collective may be looking tired and gimmicky, but the actual tracks are still worth a listen. On Melancholy Hill might be that little bit tamer and more subdued than previous tracks, but it’s understandable – Albarn is ancient at this stage.

Plan B, Prayin’. Download here.
Plan B’s vocals, gritty subject matter and Amy Winehouse-style retro production have left him sounding eerily similar to Curtis Mayfield. Throw in his grade A rapping ability and it’s hard to believe he’s a slightly overweight white boy from England who dances like a 40-year-old at a wedding.
Plan B’s first offering, Who Needs Actions When You Got Words, was a rap album which dealt exclusively with the goings on among London’s urban poor. His creative delivery and nack for storytelling made it popular among those with an interest in the genre, but was unlikely to win too many fans beyond. His latest album, The Defamation of Strickland Banks, trims down the rapping to a bare minimum and showcases his capacity as a singer. It’s shows a whole other side to the artist and has been selling like condoms at a music festival.
