Manchester United central defender Jonny Evans is expected to sign a new long-term contract with the club following praise from manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Northern Ireland international has cemented his place in the United side in recent months in the absence of Rio Ferdinand who was sidelined through injury for lengthy periods.

Evans has made a total of 64 first-team appearances for United, having previously been on loan twice with Sunderland.

Speaking at the player-of-the-year awards last night Ferguson told MUTV that a new contract is inevitable, even though no formal agreement has been made.

“Jonny has proved himself. He has signed a new contract and helps to provide a good foundation for the club for a long time” said the United boss.
