American tennis player John Isner was defeated in just over an hour of his second round match against Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker at Wimbledon, only a day after defeating Frenchman Nicholas Mahut in the longest tennis match in history.
Isner’s epic first round encounter against Mahut lasted for an astounding eleven hours and five minutes in total, took three days to complete and broke numerous records such as the longest number of games played and most aces served, both individually (Isner with 112) and combined (215).
An obviously fatigued Isner struggled to get going against De Bakker, however and called for a medical timeout for treatment to his neck and shoulders after losing the opening set 6-0.
Isner tried to maintain his energy levels by munching on bananas and energy bars between games, but only managed five games in the remaining two sets, with De Bakker eventually defeating the American 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 in a match which lasted 74 minutes in total.
