Automotive manufacturer Volvo has taken road safety one-step further by adding external air bags to the outside of one of their cars, but we’re not sure why?

Anyone who gets in the way of someone driving a new Volvo V40 can expect to be cradled softly as if they’re in arms of a mother bear, before they’re thrown to the hard solid pavement. That’s what we assume would happen to someone hit by a car that has external airbags.

According to the Swedish news site TheLocal.se, the new Volvo V40 hatchback has been equipped with the latest in safety features including the first ever “external“ airbag system.

However, no matter how long or hard we think about the ‘worlds-first pedestrian airbag’ we just don’t see how it can work. Okay, so the initial hit might be soft and comforting, but what goes up… must come down.

Production of the new Volvo V40 starts in May 2012. The car will be built in Volvo Car Corporation’s plant in Ghent, Belgium.

It will be interesting to see how exactly the new external airbags work, however, having said that, we wouldn’t like to be the guinea pigs to test it out first.

Nice car all the same.
