According to a survey carried out across the sea, 33 per cent of divorces in the UK cited Facebook as a reason for calling it quits.
Citing Facebook as a reason to divorce your partner may seem like a strange one but it’s been on the rise since 2009. Back in 2009, only 20 per cent of behavioural petitions blamed the social network so it’s clear that Facebook can cause problems at home (which you probably already know by now).
The UK divorce website Divorce-Online carried out the survey which saw 5,000 people in both 2011 and 2009 being asked a series of questions about their divorce from their partner. Facebook mostly related to the spouse’s behaviour with the opposite sex, and using the website to make comments about their exes after separation.
According to T3, the top three reasons for citing Facebook for divorce were: Inappropriate messages to members of the opposite sex; Separated spouses posting nasty comments about each other; and Facebook friends reporting spouse’s bad behaviour.
However, Twitter only came up on 20 out of the 5,000 petitions or 0.4 per cent for you number lovers out there.
Mark Keenan a spokesman for Divorce-Online said, “People need to be careful what they write on their walls as the courts are seeing these posts being used in financial disputes and children cases as evidence.”
