Roger Federer’s quarter final loss to Tomas Berdych in this year’s Wimbledon Championships has seen him drop to number three in the ATP world rankings.

Federer had been world number one as late as June of this year, before Rafa Nadal overtook the Swiss by winning his fifth French Open title (Federer lost in the quarters of that tournament too).

Federer had previously been top of the rankings for 285 weeks, just one week short of Pete Sampras’ record. It was the first time in eight years that Federer hadn’t made the final of Wimbledon.

Nadal’s men’s singles final victory has increased his lead at the top of the rankings, while Novak Djokovic has overtaken Federer by reaching the semi-final.

Finalist Berdych has risen from 13th to 8th in the world, while the biggest climber was Yen-hsun Lu who has gone from 82nd to 42nd. He defeated Andy Roddick in the 4th round.

World number three is Federer’s lowest position in the rankings since 2003.
