Italian manufacturer Fiat is to join forces with Japanese car company Mazda in order to build the ultimate tag-team roadster.

It’s not the first time that two leading car companies have joined forces to make a super roadster. Only recently Subaru and Toyota teamed up to create one car with two separate identities – the Subaru BRZ and the Toyota GT 86.

Well now it looks like Fiat Group and Mazda are set to develop two lightweight, rear-wheel drive, two-seater vehicles with each manufacturer employing its own distinctive design language and powertrain options.

The car looks set to be badged as an Alfa Romeo (who are a part of the Fiat Group along with Jeep and Chrysler), however, the final agreement is expected to be signed in the second-half of 2012, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

According to FIAT Group Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne, “This agreement clearly demonstrates our commitment to Alfa Romeo and the determination to grow it into a truly global brand.

“By partnering with Mazda, we will be co-operating with the recognised leader in compact rear-drive vehicle architectures in order to deliver an exciting and stylish roadster in the Alfa Romeo tradition.

“We are appreciative of this collaboration with Mazda and look forward to maintaining a fruitful and continuous relationship.”

Frankly, this is some great news for motor enthusiasts, as now the BRZ/GT86 will have some serious competition to look forward to.

All we need now is a photo/drawing of the Mazda-Fiat roadster. However, that may take awhile.
