Cork city manager Joe Gavin has come out against plans by the GAA to purchase a 6.2 acre site from City Hall as part of the Pairc Ui Chaoimh redevelopment project.

The GAA’s plans involve a redevelopment of the stands and the addition of an adjacent centre of excellence which would feature a 1,000-seater all-weather facility.

Opposition appears to be centred around plans to develop a docklands project on a 25.5 acre site nearby.

However, County Board chairman Jerry O’Sullivan told the Irish Independent that the stadium development should go ahead with an adjacent centre of excellence: “Everyone knows Pairc Ui Chaoimh is in bad need of redevelopment to bring it up to pace with needs of the spectator and player of today.

“But it wouldn’t make sense for us to press ahead with that and then build a centre of excellence some miles away. The site is perfect for all our needs,” said O’Sullivan. “All we are looking for is four extra acres.”

The plans are up for vote on Monday.
