Google have been working hard on their self-driving car technology and now it’s so good that a blind man named Steve took it for a test spin.

Here’s Steve. Sadly for Steve, he has lost 95 per cent of his vision, which pushes him well past the stage of being declared legally blind. Yet, here he is driving to Taco Bell to pick up some food. This really is driving technology at its best.

The YouTube video which was posted this week has the following caption: “Here’s Steve, who joined us for a special drive on a carefully programmed route to experience being behind the wheel in a whole new way.

“We organised this test as a technical experiment, but we think it’s also a promising look at what autonomous technology may one day deliver if rigorous technology and safety standards can be met.”

If this Google self-driving car does make it to the mainstream it will open up an endless world of possibilities to people who are hindered by any disability that stops them from driving.

It would be like having your own personal driver, but without having to politely step around the all the awkward chitchat.
