A man from Dublin, who was stopped on suspicion of drink driving, decided to steal the Garda car he was placed in and then he drove it up to Newry.
Now, we don’t condone the theft of Garda cars, or anything for that matter, but you have to admire the sheer cojones on this chap. He was pulled over on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol in Balbriggan at around half eight on Sunday night.
He was placed in the Garda car while the Gardaí went to have a look at his own vehicle, probably checking for evidence and what not. They must have assumed that the drunk driver was safe enough on his own in the patrol car, but how wrong they were.
The Irish Times reports that he was placed in the back of the Garda car but somehow managed to get into the front seat and drive away. The suspect drove up the A1 motorway and smashed his way through a toll plaza barrier in Drogheda and continued on up towards the border. An 80km journey all in all.
According to UTV, a Garda spokesman confirmed on Monday that officers along the A1 route had been alerted to the situation – but added that the driver had somehow evaded them. All those hours playing GTA: IV must have finally come in handy for him.
The car has since been located abandoned along the A1 near Newry and Gardaí along with the help of the PSNI are searching for the Garda car bandit.
For all his evasive abilities the driver was lacking in a little common sense. Why? Well, he did leave his car with the Gardaí back in Balbriggan, so it wont be long until they know exactly who to look for. If only America’s Dumbest Criminals took Irish submissions.
