Has the children’s hospital finally got a new home?

It looks like the preferred location for the new National Children’s Hospital could be at Dublin’s Mater Hospital, but haven’t we heard that somewhere before?

It’s understood that the religious order of nuns who owns the hospital have put forward a new proposal about the site.

According to various reports, the Sisters of Mercy have given their support for a plan which could see the original hospital building being given to the State so as they can use it as teaching and research facilities for a new children’s hospital. It looks like this badly needed hospital could finally be in motion.

However, if we remember back to when the Matter site was last being looked at, many outside patient groups said a children’s hospital located in the middle of the city centre would not be the easiest thing to reach in a hurry. They also said that it would be hard to reach for people coming from the country.

The Matter site was actually refused by An Bord Pleanála back in February, because of the impact the 16-floor building would have on the Dublin skyline. However, it now looks like a move to the Matter could very well be back on the cards.
