Former world snooker champ Alex Higgins has been living off baby food since losing his teeth during a course of radiotherapy treatment for throat cancer and could die if he does not have a dental operation, his former PA has claimed.

Pals of the Belfast-born snooker legend have been desperately trying to raise £20,000 needed to fund the treatment, but time is believed to be running out as the ‘Hurricane’ has seen his weight drop to just six stone.

Will Robinson, the former PA of the 61-year-old told the Mirror that Higgins could die if he is not given teeth implants as a matter of urgency.

“We are desperately trying to raise £20,000 for teeth implants, which his dentist insists will help him eat properly again,” said Robinson.

“Alex is living in a tiny flat in Belfast and has been living off baby food for years. It’s so sad. Unless we do something he could be facing death.

“He’s still loved by many and we’re hoping people will remember what he brought to the sport.”

Robinson even suggested that if Higgins receives the treatment then he could return to the game. He added, “It would be amazing if he could get better and, who knows, one day made it back to the table.”

Snooker pros such as John Virgo, Jimmy White and others are due to attend a fund-raising dinner in Manchester on Tuesday, at which Higgins is also expected to appear.
