Workers in the Limerick branches of HMV staged a peaceful sit in protest overnight to show their anger at being left ‘abandoned’ by UK management.
It came as a shock to some, while others saw it as inevitable, but HMV’s Irish operations went into receivership yesterday and now staff are worried about their pay.
Around this time last year the lingerie chain La Senza announced it was closing it’s doors in Ireland for good – to the dismay of Irish blokes everywhere – and it looked like staff were going to be left without their due pay checks. However, after a lengthy stand off they got what was owed to them. Now staff at HMV fear they might not get pay that’s owed to them, like the girls in La Senza.
Ben McGilloway, who works at HMV at the Pavilion shopping centre in the Swords area of Dublin said: “We’ve been told that we’re temporarily being made redundant. If there’s a solution to the situation, we’ll potentially be re-hired,” reports Breaking News Ireland.
“Our pay month ended on Saturday, so we would be due pay on Friday week for our Christmas hours, (including) all the overtime.”
Here’s to hoping it all ends well for the HMV staff involved. Here’s their Facebook page if you want to show some support.
