Rossie hoolie in Tottenham and The Mort nears Twitter milestone

Numerous high-profile sporting figures have been put forward as potential deterrents to the rioters across the UK today. We hoped Hulk Hogan would follow through on his suggestion of some “body-slamming” moves on the streets of London, while Roy Keane has also been touted as a potential hero to infiltrate the carnage in Inger-land on his 40th birthday.

The reality is that it’s taken a hardy, former Roscommon inter-county star to stand up to the thugs across the pond. Michael Finneran, a reliable corner-forward in his day, was caught up in the riots on Monday night as he battened down the hatches at the pub he runs in Tottenham.

As London was being smashed, looted and set alight, Finneran is reported to have turned the key in the door of the Prince Arthur pub and staged a lock-in for the lucky boozers on the premises at the time.

No reports, as of yet, that there was a pool table or a former Roscommon star by the name of Frankie Dolan present for the hoolie.

The Mort’s Twitter milestone

Back on home soil and in the modern age of technology and Twitter – an era the GAA seemingly aren’t willing to move in synch with just yet – the prolific Conor Mortimer (@conmort) is nearing a milestone follower mark on his beloved plaything – he’s just a handful of followers away from 2,000.

Calls from GAA chiefs for players to tone down their involvement on Twitter are falling on deaf ears as the likes of The Mort are continuously garnering followers on their personal pages.

Mortimer is an ever-increasingly popular GAA tweeter but he still has some catching up to do on Armagh’s Stevie McDonnell (@Killeavy13 with almost 2,200 followers), Kerry sniper Darran O’Sullivan (@Darransull86 with over 3,300 followers) and the all-conquering Dublin ace Bernard Brogan (@bernardbrogan with nearly 7,000 followers).

Go on, give The Mort a follow – and a bigger head than he already has.
