Stoke City 2-1 Aston Villa

Robert Huth scored with the last kick of the game to seal a 2-1 victory for Stoke City over Aston Villa at the Britannia Stadium on Monday night.

Huth capitalised on uncertainty in the Villa penalty area and turned Matthew Etherington’s left-wing cross into the top corner to send the home faithful into raptures.

Villa took the lead in the 35th minute when Stewart Downing headed in a Marc Albrighton cross and the lead was fully deserved as the visitors were the better side in the opening half.

Stoke, who included Irish international Marc Wilson in their starting line-up, were far better after the break and grabbed an equaliser in the 80th minute when Kenwyne Jones headed in Matthew Etherington’s left-wing cross.

The game looked set to finish all square until Huth’s late intervention, which gave the Potters their first points of the season. Stoke manager Tony Pulis was in attendance for the second half of the game, despite the fact that his mother had died earlier in the day.
