Former champion John Daly struck a 66 in the opening round of the Open at St Andrews but admitted that he could have scored even lower.
Daly, the champion on the same course in 1995, is tied for the clubhouse lead with Scotland’s Andrew Coltart on the first morning of the 139th championship.
Speaking to the BBC afterwards, Daly said, “I’m not too disappointed, the putts I missed I hit my lines except 17 for the par, I piulled that one a little bit.
“You have to be aggressive from your putts around here because the greens are slow but even if you think you’ve hit it well you’re never sure, they can break a lot in the last few inches. So I left some shots out there but I’m pleased with the way I’m driving the ball.
“This is just my seventh or eighth tournament in the last three, three and a half years but I’m starting to get my confidence in my game. I’ve had a lot of injuries which has made it hard to practise but I’m healthy now.”
