It has been revealed that an Irishman, who has been labelled as a drug mule, died in Venezuela on Wednesday when a condom filled with cocaine burst in his stomach.
The Irish Independent has named the dead man as Martin ‘Butch’ Beirne, who apparently had connections with a Sligo-based crime family. Police found Beirne, who was in his 30s, in a Venezuelan hotel on Wednesday after emergency services were alerted to the incident.
Beirne was travelling with two other Irish nationals, believed to be from Galway, who are currently waiting to appear in front of a court in Caracas today on drug trafficking offences.
A source close to the Irish Independent said that the lads thought they were buying the drugs from others in Dublin and not importing drugs themselves. However, it all went pear shaped… to say the least.
Irish drug mules are an increasing problem as we know all too well. Last year, one 20-year-old was caught trying to leave Brazil with more cocaine inside him than someone at a Whitney Houston after party. Too soon?
Fortunately for the young lad who got caught in Brazil, none of the bags broke inside him, however, Martin Beirne has shown that there only has to be one small nick in the bag for disaster to happen.
Of all the things you shouldn’t put up your arse, drugs has to be one of the highest on the list.
