An Irish senior citizen who claims he was made ‘the butt of jokes’ by being stereotyped by two cruise ship comedians has made an out-of-court settlement over the incident.
Being Irish, we’re used to hearing ‘the one about the drunken Paddy’, but one Irishman was left humiliated after comedians on cruise ship made us Irish the butt of their jokes. He wasn’t too pleased…
John Wolfe, a 74-year-old retired builder, travelled on two P&O cruises with his missus Joan in 2007 and 2008 respectively. In 2007, the pair were aboard the Oriana when the first comedian began making fun of the Irish. Mr Wolfe complained to P&O and was then told that such jokes would be banned from further performances. The couple was offered a €1,250 voucher as compensation. Not bad, right?
All seemed well and good for the Wolfe’s. They had a nice voucher to spend and the cruise liner promised to ban the jokes from being used again. However, in 2008 the couple took a similar P&O cruise to the Caribbean on board the Artemis only to hear the same stereotypical jokes about the Irish for a second time.
Wolfe then brought a civil claim against Carnival Plc., the owners of P&O, who decided it would be best to settle out of court.
A P&O spokesperson said: “We can confirm that this case has been resolved amicably out of court to the satisfaction of both parties.”
It hasn’t been revealed how much exactly Mr Wolfe was given, but it’s reported to have been a five figure sum.
