According to a new study, Ireland is one of the top countries in the world to be born in. So can count yourself lucky if you and the missus have a bun in the oven.

What’s all this about Ireland being one of the top countries to be born in in 2013?

It may come as a surprise to some of you, but Ireland is actually the 12th best country to be born in in 2013. The study comes from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a sister company to The Economist, and it looked at 80 countries to see which would be the best to be born in next year. As we said, Ireland sits 12th on the 80 country strong list.

So how do other countries stack up?

It’s actually quite surprising, as some countries that you’d expect to be at the top actually scored quite low, such as France (26), Britain (27) and the USA (16).

The top 12 looks like this:

1 Switzerland
2 Australia
3 Norway
4 Sweden
5 Denmark
6 Singapore
7 New Zealand
8 Netherlands
9 Canada
10 Hong Kong
11 Finland
12 Ireland

As for the bottom 10:

70 Azerbaijan
71 Indonesia
72 Russia
73 Syria
74 Kazakhstan
75 Pakistan
76 Angola
77 Bangladesh
78 Ukraine
79 Kenya
80 Nigeria

Wow, there’s some contrast there… So how did they decide where the best place to be born was?

The study looked through an overwhelming amount of data to compile a list of the countries with the best opportunities for a healthy, safe and prosperous life in years to come. Surveys where given to people in all 80 countries and they asked how happy people were, their fear of crime, trust in public institutions and how healthy their family was.

In total, 11 factors were taken into account and that’s why Ireland scored so high, because at the end of the day, Ireland isn’t all that bad…
