Veteran England goalkeeper David James has turned down a move to Celtic and completed a free transfer to Championship club Bristol City from Portsmouth.

The Scottish giants were believed to have been close to signing the former Liverpool and Aston Villa goalkeeper, but the 39 year old chose Bristol City instead and put pen to paper on a one year deal with the Robins.

James admitted that he had offers to remain in the Premier League, but is looking forward to challenging for promotion to the top division with his new club.

“I’ve had offers to stay in the Premier League but it is more important that I play football – which I love – for the right club and be a family man,” he told the club’s official website.

“I had a long conversation with the chairman Steve Lansdown yesterday and I liked what he said about the club and his ambition. I know all about the plans for a new stadium and desire to win promotion to the Premier League.

“The club is ambitious and that’s what I am. The south west has not had a club in the Premier League and that needs to change.”

James passed a medical on Friday afternoon and will be unveiled to the home crowd before Saturday’s friendly against Blackpool.
