This weekend sees two of the most talked about movies of the year hitting cinema screens nationwide, while the eagerly awaited Final Fantasy XIII-2 video game will also be released.
Find out what it’s like to be a teenager who has super powers with Chronicle
If you’re heading out to the cinema this weekend then make sure to check out the super power movie that is Chronicle. The movie has already received great reviews from critics and it’s certainly unlike anything that we’ve seen before.
A group of mates discover a rather interesting hole in the ground and after a bit of snooping around they realise they’ve stumbled across super powers. Fancy that? Some of the movie is shot with the same shaky handheld camcorder footage that we saw in Cloverfield, so if you liked Cloverfield you’ll probably love this. You can read our review here.
Don’t jump! Instead, go see Man on a Ledge
If science fiction isn’t your cup of tea then fear not as there is yet another highly talked about movie hitting Irish cinemas this weekend. Man on a Ledge follows the story of a wrongly convicted former cop who escapes from prison in an attempt to clear his name. In order to clear his name he climbs out onto the ledge of a New York high-rise building and insists that he has to talk to a particular detective… as you do.
We won’t ruin the rest but do note that the first three rows of every cinema will be considered ‘splash zones’.
Play, yet another, Final Fantasy game with Final Fantasy XIII-2
We couldn’t forget about all the gamers out there, so for you guys, this weekend brings something special. The Final Fantasy franchise releases the direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII and it’s called (rather unimaginatively) Final Fantasy XIII-2.

The game is set to keep the fans of the franchise up for days as it boasts loads of mini-games and customisable characters. Don’t worry if you didn’t get a chance to play Final Fantasy XIII as XIII-2 offers a handy comprehensive tutorial for new and rusty players alike.
Enjoy the comedy stylings of Andrew Maxwell at Vicar Street
Andrew Maxwell is probably best known for his spot on the popular current affairs/comedy show The Pannel, which sadly died a death when Dara O’Briain left the show for greener pastures. Since then, Andrew has gone on to do great and wonderful things such as being crowned Channel 4’s King of Comedy and making a name for himself over in the UK.
The Northsider returns to Dublin for a show in Vicar Street on February 4 at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster for €25.
Relive a classic movie with our Cult Film of the Week

If you’ve nothing else to do this weekend why not head down to the local DVD shop (if Netflix hasn’t killed it off yet) and watch Neil Patrick Harris in the highly subversive Starship Troopers.
If you haven’t already, we’d certainly advise you to make your way over to the Jameson Cult Film Club website to check out what the folks over there also recommend.
