Joe Kernan is set to quit his post as Galway manager after less than a year in charge according to a report in Wednesday’s Irish Examiner.

The paper reported that Kernan has already handed in his resignation to the Galway County Board and although it has not been confirmed whether or not the reports are true, the County Board have released a statement saying that the matter would be dealt with in a meeting on Wednesday evening.

“At our last meeting we gave an undertaking to the clubs that we were going to review the situation with the manager. We have done that and we will be reporting back tomorrow night at our meeting with the clubs,” the statement read.

Kernan endured a disappointing spell as boss of the Tribesmen’s footballers since taking over from Liam Sammon last autumn. Galway finished in fifth place in Division One of the League, before being defeated by Sligo after a replay in the Connacht semi-final and losing out to Wexford in the qualifiers a week later.

It is thought that current Sligo manager and former Galway footballer Kevin Walsh would be the firm favourite to take over should Kernan’s departure be confirmed.
