Moorefield manager and former Dublin footballer Jack Sheedy has sparked controversy by opting to leave out two county players from his starting lineup, claiming their inclusion would have had a disruptive impact on his team.
Sheedy described his decision to omit Daryl Flynn (pictured) and David Whyte, Kildare’s midfield duo in their last league clash against Mayo, as a difficult one but maintained it was the best course of action for the team.
The pair is expected to feature in Kildare’s tie with Wexford, set to kick off 5 June. Ronan Sweeney and Tom Corley however, Moorefield’s other county players, were given starts in the clash.
Sheedy rested the pair before Sunday’s Moorefield vs. Suncroft on game, which Moorefield went on to win 0-15 to 0-10.
“It’s very difficult,†said Sheedy. “We’re in the enviable position of having four guys on the county panel and we don’t get to see them too often before the championship games.â€
“If you have one player you can slot him back into the team without too many disruptions, but when you are trying to put four players back into a team, it’s a hugely difficult situation to try and deal with. You have to change positions, change styles – it’s not an ideal situation by any means.
“It’s unfair on the players involved as well. In our case there is a new set-up, new thoughts, new ideas and it’s hard to get all that across in one training session like we had with all the players last week.â€
