Germany have named experienced defender Philipp Lahm as their captain for the World Cup in South Africa.

Lahm succeeds the captaincy from Michael Ballack who will miss out on the finals due to an ankle injury which he sustained in the FA Cup final for Chelsea.

Manager Joachim Low has opted for the Bayern Munich right-back to lead Germany at the World Cup and club team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger as vice-captain.

26-year-old Lahm has 69 caps in his international career to date.
