Ireland has laid claim to some cracking world firsts – the submarine, the ejector seat and the mashed potato sandwich being chief among them. However, a Laois vet has just gone one better by creating a bionic cat.
Oscar proved that black cats are indeed unlucky by getting his two back paws torn off during a confrontation with a combine harvester.

While many vets would have opted to simply slot his arse into a bucket with a wheel on either side, Mountmellick vet Noel Fitzpatrick decided to he could improve on the arse bucket treatment method.
Fitzpatrick, who now works in Surrey in England, designed a set of prosthetic paws similar to those used by blade-legged athlete Oscar Pistorius.
Oscar is now fully mobile thanks to his custom-made implants, and his story is set to be told as part of a six-part up-coming BBC documentary series called, The Bionic Vet.
