Andy Lee defeated French veteran Mamadou Thiam in the University of Limerick Arena on Saturday night. With only two rounds of the fight complete, Thiam remained in his chair and failed to emerge for round three, citing a back injury as the reason behind his inability to continue.
Even before Thiam’s injury, Lee had been dominant in the opening two rounds and would have been favourite to come out on top should the fight have continued. Promoter Brian Peters said in the aftermath of the fight that he is hoping to organise a bout between Lee and current European middleweight holder Darren Barker to take place in Limerick later this year.
