Irish middleweight Andy Lee has revealed that early discussions have taken place about a fight against reigning WBA champion Felix Sturm.
Sturm has held the WBA belt for more than three years, during which time he has improved his professional record to 33 wins, two losses and one draw.
However, a dispute with his promoter has kept him inactive for more than 12 months, and Limerick native Lee (20-1) is keen on a crack at the 31-year-old German.
In his latest US Diary piece for JOE, Lee wrote, “There’s a bit of talk about a fight against WBA champion Felix Sturm. Emmanuel Steward, my manager, got a call a couple of weeks ago about that.
“Sturm has just settled his lawsuit with his promoter and he’s going to be ready to come back. I’m in the WBA and he holds that title, so they asked ‘Would I be up for it?’ I said definitely. I’d jump at it.
“Sturm has been champion for the last five or six years but like a lot of those guys they’re there for the taking, and especially coming off a long lay-off, now would be the time to get him.
“Fingers crossed that happens, but if it doesn’t happen straight away it’ll happen eventually. I’m still young enough and I just have to keep winning. If I do that, the big fights will come.â€
