It has been reported that a magnitude 4 earthquake hit the west coast of Ireland earlier this morning. Belmullet, Co Mayo to be precise.
It’s not everyday we experience an earthquake on the island of Ireland, but at around 9am this morning the west coast county of Mayo felt a magnitude 4 earthquake.
According to local media reports and eye-witness evidence (we checked Twitter…) tremors were felt around the county.
The British Geological Survey confirmed that the quake occurred 60k west of Belmullet coast early this morning but according to latest reports, everyone is okay. North-west Mayo is sparsely populated; we’re guessing 60 kilometres into the Atlantic is even less so.
Callers excitedly clogged the switchboard of Mid West Radio, overwhelmed by the experience of something actually happening in Mayo*.
However, it doesn’t seem as though everyone in Mayo felt it with Twitter being divided between those who did and those who didn’t.

If we hear of any further developments today we’ll keep you posted.
* No offence meant. We know loads of stuff happens in Mayo every day.
