Man makes green DIY machine out of Fiat 500 parts

A bloke over in the US has turned his Fiat 500 into a lean, green, DIY machine after he installed a top of the range electric engine all by himself. Now that’s what we call DIY motoring.

The Fiat 500 is certainly one of the smaller motors out there, but it’s also one of the most fun to drive. Its small, sleek, aerodynamic body makes it zip around like an oversized go-kart and there’s nothing more fun than an oversized go-kart.

Fiat is currently planning on bringing out an electric version of the Fiat 500 in the not too distant future. Rumours from the States are saying the Fiat 500 EVs will go into production this year and they may be rolled out in 2013. So it could be 2014 before we see them on this side of the pond.

However, one car enthusiast, Kerry McLean, just couldn’t wait to own an all green Fiat 500 (which is actually painted black), so he went and made one himself in what has to be one of the greatest DIY motoring achievements of the year. And it only took him two months to complete the whole conversion. Some man.

His home made electric car is actually made up of a normal fuel going Fiat 500 which has had its engine ripped out, naturally. The EV gets up to 50 miles per charge and a single charge costs around €0.75. To get this far in a petrol car you’d spend anywhere between €5 to €10.
